Colors:

  No color is 'rare'.  

 

Red

Black and tan

Chocolate and tan

Wild boar--most commonly occurs in wire hairs

Black--no tan markings

 

Chocolate--all chocolate colored, no tan markings

  

 

Chocolate dapple--solid chocolate pictured above with dapple markings, no tan markings.

 

Isabella (Fawn)

 

    washed out chocolate in color, with or without tan markings.  Isabella's can be prone to coat problems

 

Blue--can have either tan or cream points

can also be prone to coat problems--steel gray similar to a weimaraner, has tan markings.

 

Wheaton--most common in wire hairs

  no picture--very pale yellow

Piebald: not to be confused with double dapples.  A true Piebalds will never have blue eyes.

Patterns: (markings)

Any pattern can appear on any color and if combinations are right, two patterns can appear on any color.  Only one pattern will be registered by AKC in most cases.  See current colors listed below.  These change from time to time.

Brindle

can also be black and tan brindle with the brindle showing only in the tan points

 

Dapple

Sable--most common in long hairs

very dark, looks like a black and tan from a distance.  

 Many colors with a black or dark overlay are called 'sables'. 

 

cream--predominately a long hair color, but starting to appear in smooth hairs

 

double dapple--breeding for this pattern is the result of breeding two dapples together and has the potential to produce small eyes, deafness, blindness or other abnormalities.
